Rocky Point Engineering provided the mechanical, plumbing, medical gas and fire suppression design for the Medical Devices Reprocessing (MDR) Department at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH). The project site is located in the basement level of the hospital. The project consisted of several construction components which included: (i) dedicated elevators between the MDR in the basement and the ORs located on the upper level; (ii) redesign and expansion renovations to the MDR, including a new dedicated clean air handling unit; (iii) redesign and renovations to the MDR OR support spaces; and (iv) relocating the existing housekeeping area.

Project Description

The project was undertaken in a phased redevelopment approach within the existing MDR and OR spaces to allow the spaces to operate during construction with minimal interruption of service within the departments. The phased process and scope of work included:

  • Providing a new elevator cab in an existing vacant elevator shaft adjacent to the MDR department to serve as a dirty MDR elevator directly linking the OR and MDR
  • Installing a new air handling unit on the level 3 rooftop and exterior duct enclosure for the clean air spaces in the MDR
  • MDR renovations in four stages
  • Creating a new MDR within the old sterile store area while maintaining the operation of the existing MDR
  • Converting the old MDR to a new sterile store area
  • MDR OR support space renovations
  • Installation of owner-supplied equipment including 5 new sterilizers, 5 new washer/disinfectors and 2 new cart washers
